The Nederlandse competitie
Wednesday, July 6, 2011
The Dutch Premier League also called as the Dutch Eredivisie (Premier League) is ranked as the ninth best football league around the world. This ranking is given by UEFA (Union of European Football Associations). UEFA handles all the administrative work of European football and beach soccer. The Nederlandse competitie (Dutch League) is ranked as the top league in Netherlands. In 1954, the professional football started in Netherlands and after two years of that i.e. in 1956, the Eredivisie was founded.
This league consists of 18 clubs. They have to face each other twice during the whole tournament; once at the home town and second time away from hometown. The winner of the league is declared as the Dutch national champion. The AFC Ajax club has won the title for most of the time (22 titles). The most winning second and third champions are PSV Eindhoven with 18 titles and Feyenoord with 9 titles.
PTT Telecompetitie was the official name of the Eredivisie football from 1990 to 1999. This name was kept after the sponsors – PTT Telecom. Then in 1999, the name was changed to KPN Telecompetitie and to KPN Eredivisie in 2000. The name of this league was then changed to Holland Casino Eredivisie from 2002-2005. Later for the year 2005-06, this league was sponsored by Sponsorloterji lottery but its name never got attached with the league (as the earlier sponsors) because of some legal concerns.
The eighteen participating teams 2011-2012 of the Dutch football are Ajax Amsterdam, Twente Enschede, PSV Eindhoven, FC Groningen, AZ Alkmaar, Roda JC Kerkrade, ADO Den Haag, SC Heracles Almelo, FC Utrecht, Feyenoord Roterdam, NEC Nijmegen, Heerenveen, NAC Breda, De Graafschap, Vitesse Arnhem, Excelsior, VVV Venlo and Willem II Tilburg. Only three clubs amongst these eighteen clubs have much higher attendance than the others since the league started which are Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord. Due to this, the bets are made mostly on these top three clubs.
